A release stated that Joykumar, 27, resident of Takhel, Imphal East district, was born with a large hole in the heart called ASD, it stated. Since childhood, he was advised to undergo open heart surgery outside Manipur by many doctors but could not afford to go outside the state, it added.

With time, the hole started damaging his heart to an extent that his survival was getting numbered, it stated. Sky hospital, for the first time in the history of Manipur, started open heart surgery and device closure of such hole in the heart in 2015 proved to be a blessing for him, it added.

The exact size and position of the hole were identified after careful assessments of his heart-hole with sophisticated Echo–procedure called Trans-Echocardiography (TEE), it stated. TEE is the gold standard for accurate diagnosis and assessment of suitability of device closure for ASD and Sky hospital is the first hospital in Manipur to have started using this TEE technique, it stated. Taking appropriate precaution of the current pandemic situation, the Device closure of his ASD with 40 mm size American made device-Amplazer was performed successfully under local anaesthesia on Tuesday successfully, it added.

He started consuming food two hours after the procedure with Joykumar mobilising the next day and was discharged two days after the procedure, it stated. The post-operative recovery period is also prolonged after the open heart surgery; Joykumar was visibly happy with a device closure of the heart-hole, thereby avoiding an open heart surgery, it added.
