The Iramdam Kanba Apunba Lup (IKAL) on Friday said that politicians and drug lords of Manipur have become two sides of the same coin.
In a release signed by secretary general of IKAL, W Luwangleima, it stated that there is a big question of whether the politicians are supporting the drug lords to abolish the society.
Pointing out that the accused of the tobacco haul case of Luwangsangbam on July 28 morning were set free on bail by the court, the IKAL stated that there are many other cases where the accused did not get deserving punishment as per the law.
The IKAL further pointed out that many big drug haul cases such as the infamous ‘Airport drug haul case’ and ‘Pallel drug haul case’ of 2013 are still pending in the court.
It also asked why additional SP, Th Brinda, who is a true warrior of ‘War on Drugs’ is receiving threat instead of giving punishment to the former chairman of Chandel ADC, Lhukhosei Zou, who was apprehended with Rs. 27 crore drugs.
The IKAL stated that as per the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and the Prevention of Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1988, a person caught with two grams of drugs should be punished with six months imprisonment and if caught with 50 grams and above drugs, the person should be punished with 10 to 20 years jail term. However, it can be said that not a single person arrested with drugs had been given deserving punishment as per the law in the state and the numbers drug business is rapidly increasing, it added.
Asserting that IKAL is all set to take the ‘war on drugs’ in their hands bravely and eradicate drugs business from the state, it stated that the public and the government need to work together to save the future generations from drug menace.
