Manipur COVID-19 death toll climbs to five

Another COVID-19 patient at JNIMS succumbed to the illness on Friday morning.

Another COVID-19 patient at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Manipur succumbed to the illness on Friday morning, taking the death toll in the state due to the illness to five, according to JNIMS authority.

The COVID-19 victim, a 38-year-old man from Lilong Khunou, who was admitted at JNIMS Covid care facility on July 29, died around 4.30 am Friday, the hospital authority said.

The state reported its first COVID-19 death case on Wednesday. The victim was a 56-year-old man from Khongjom in Thoubal district. He was reportedly admitted to RIMS on May 5 as he was suffering from multiple ailments, including chronic kidney disease and diabetes and he had multiple sessions of dialysis. On July 26, he was found positive for COVID-19, the hospital sources said.

The cause of the death of the first vctim included chronic kidney disease, respiratory tract infection, COVID-19, Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus and hypertension, RIMS Medical Superintendent Dr Ch Arunkumar said.

On Thursday, three more deaths of COVID-19 positive patients, one each from Thoubal, Langol and Leimakhong area, were reported, according to the state health department.

The total number of COVID-19 positive cases in the state rose 2505 on Thursday, with 47 more new positive cases reported from different parts of the state. The total tally included four deaths, 829 active cases and 1,672 recovered cases, the state health department said in a statement.

In view of the rising toll and surge in positive cases, Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Thursday, July 30, announced extension of total lockdown and curfew in the state till August 6. Earlier, the total lockdown was reinforced in the entire state for seven days starting July 23.

Meanwhile, the state government has identified some locations in the valley to open new COVID care centres considering the rapid increase in COVID-19 positive cases.

Stating the decision on July 29, state Health Minister L Jayantakumar had appealed to the people to provide the locations for setting up the centres. The government needs the cooperation and understanding of the public in combating the COVID-19 pandemic, Jayantakumar said.

The health minister also appealed against stigmatising of COVID-19 patients and their family members, saying, “We cannot leave the COVID-19 positive persons alone."

Asserting that taking up preventive measures as well as saving the patients are both important, Jayantakumar appealed to the public to support each other in the fight against the virus attack.
