The United Peoples’ Front (UPF) has urged the government to aid pineapple farmers in storing and marketing the harvest like it was previously done for other farmers.

The UPF said in a release that the pineapple farmers are having a hard time as they are not able to sell the harvest due to the ongoing lockdown and curfew. The pineapple farms are the main livelihood of the people and they depend on it for education of the children, it stated.

The harvested pineapples are getting spoiled day by day and this has disheartened the farmers who worked hard and awaited the harvest to support their family, it added.

The UPF appealed to the authority concerned to look into the matter and give aid to the farmers by buying the harvest or storage of the harvest in the cold storage, the release stated.

Keeping the harvest in the cold storage will at least help in keeping the pineapples for a longer period of time and it will help farmers in coping during this hard time, it added.
