Filled with amazement and excitement, she went running through the lush green paddy field to her mother, who was working in the field, to inform her about her success in the class-12 examination. Justina Yendrenbam bagged the top position in Commerce stream in the entire state by securing a total of 89.6 per cent in the class-12 board examination conducted by the Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (COHSEM).

In an exclusive interview to Imphal Free Press, Justina revealed the key to her success in the examination and said she paid attention to her teachers. She also said that she did not aim to become a topper but her goal in life is to become a Chartered Accountant.

“I only tried my best and concentrated well while studying and paid attention to the teachings in the class. However, I did not have that aim to become a topper in the examination,” the topper said.

Speaking to the Imphal Free Press at her residence after the results were declared, Justina said that she studied only at night till 12 since she could concentrate better then. She used to complete her homework in the evening and helped her mother with household chores when she had free time in the morning and in the evening, she said.

Eldest daughter of Yendrenbam Amarjit Singh and Yendrenbam Ongbi Somola from Kangla Siphai Imphal East, Justina said her parents are supportive and that they always fulfilled her needs. Her father is employed as a contract driver in Doordarshan Kendra(DDK) and her mother is a housewife.

Justina also credited her success to her teacher in accountancy subject, Dhamendra Laishram and other teachers in the school.

Narrating her daily experience as a student, Justina said that she used to travel to school in an auto, but had to walk a few distance from her house to the auto parking since auto service did not reach her home regularly. Even if she approached the auto drivers to drop her till her house, they refused to provide the service owing to the bad road condition of her locality. A few auto drivers even asked for extra charge when she requested them to drop her till her house, she added.

“I am happy and fortunate that my daughter became a topper in the state in commerce stream since I have seen her efforts and struggles,” he told Imphal Free Press.

Expressing shock at the prevailing private tuition culture among the students in the state, Dhamendra said tuition centres asked for full payment of tuition fees while admission. He said that it was hard for him to pay the demands of the tuition centres even though her daughter joined tuitions only in class 12.

Justina’s mother Yendrenbam Ongbi Somola was in the paddy field when the results were declared. She said, “I cried when my daughter came to the paddy field and told me that she secured the top position in commerce”.

The mother also said that she was afraid that her daughter may not perform well in the examination due to their difficult situation. Justina completed matriculation from RK Sanatombi School, securing 80.4 per cent.

The results of the COHSEM Class-12 board examination 2020 were declared on Friday afternoon.
