‘Teachers can be deployed in upcoming 2021 Census, updating of NPR’

The home department and the directorate of Census operations have addressed to the commissioner regarding the utilisation of teachers.

As the government prepare itself for upcoming Census 2021 and National Population Register (NPR), commissioner, Education (S), T Ranjit has apprised deputy commissioners of all districts and director, Education (S) to take necessary action regarding the utilisation of teachers in the conduct of Census 2021 and updating of NPR.

As per an official statement by the commissioner, the home department and the directorate of Census operations have addressed to the commissioner regarding the utilisation of teachers.

It also referred to Section 27 of Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, which says, “No Teacher shall be deployed for any non-educational purpose other than the decennial population Census, disaster relief duties or duties relating to elections to the local authority or the State Legislature or Parliament, as the case may be.”

On June 18, the directorate of Census operations, Ministry of Home Affairs informed the home department that teachers can be deployed in the upcoming Census 2021 and updating of NPR which is a pan India activity.

On July 7, the home department also informed the commissioner, Education (S) that teachers can be deployed for the work as per provisions of Census Act, 1948 and the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Primary Education, 2009.
