The central government has extended the last date for linking Aadhaar card and Permanent Account Number (PAN) card to March 31, 2021 amid the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier, the deadline to link Aadhaar card and PAN card was June 30, 2020.

"Understanding and keeping in mind the times that we are in, we have extended deadlines. Aadhaar Pan linking can be done till 31st March 2021. We do hope this helps you plan things better," the income tax department posted on Twitter on Monday, July 6.

The Income Tax Department had earlier extended the deadline for payment of self-assessment tax, in case of tax liability up to Rs 1 lakh til November 30, 2020.

Why you should link your Aadhaar card and PAN card

In order to file the Income Tax Returns (ITR) it is mandatory to link the 12-digit unique identification number with PAN card, else your ITR would not be processed.

Also, if one is applying for a new PAN card, it is a must to quote the Aadhaar number. While, for new PAN card applicants, interlinking is done automatically during the application stage, for the existing PAN cardholders, it is mandatory to link it with Aadhaar within the deadline.
