First micronutrients fortified food distribution in Kangpokpi

With an aim to address health and nutrition issues among infants, children, and pregnant and lactating mothers, Social Welfare Minister Nemcha Kipgen on Monday kicked off the first ever distribution of micronutrients fortified energy dense food in the state at Kangpokpi district.

With an aim to address health and nutrition issues among infants, children, and pregnant and lactating mothers, Social Welfare Minister Nemcha Kipgen on Monday kicked off the first ever distribution of micronutrients fortified energy dense food in the state at Kangpokpi district.

The distribution function under the aegis of Social Welfare department, government of Manipur held at the office premises of Kangpokpi ICDS Project was attended by minister Nemcha Kipgen, DC Kangpokpi, Somorjit Salam,  joint director, ICDS Bantee Konthoujam, deputy director, ICDS Ela Magdalene, scheme officer, SNP Kh Jogendra, DPO ICDS Cell, Kangpokpi, Miranda Zimik, CDPOs and supervisors of ICDS Project under Kangpokpi, Saitu and Saikul also attended the function apart from Anganwadi workers and mini Anganwadi workers.

As she elaborated her concern to provide micronutrients fortified food among the children of Manipur accordingly so as to tackle micronutrient deficiencies within affected groups of a population in the state, Nemcha Kipgen said that fortification of complementary food is seen as a potent intervention to address child malnutrition and it is recognised as one of the top four methods for reducing micronutrient malnutrition at the global level.

The minister said that in order to boost children’s immune systems, adequate food that includes vitamins and minerals should be given as they are vital for their optimal health, growth, immune function, brain development and many other important functions.

Appealing the officials of ICDS/CDPO and the Anganwadi workers and helpers to consider that service to mankind as service to God, minister Nemcha Kipgen instructed them provide the micronutrients fortified energy dense food to the children/beneficiaries as micronutrient deficiencies can have devastating consequences while cautioning that befitting action shall be initiated to those violating the guidelines.

The minister also said that distribution of micronutrients fortified energy dense food will also be carried out in all other districts of the state as well at the earliest.

Distributed under National Social Assistance Programmes, the micronutrients fortified energy dense food includes Daliya Sweet and Khichidi. The ingredients of Daliya Sweet are Wheat, Sugar, Soya, Groundnuts, Milk Powder, edible Veg.oil, Ragi, vitamins and minerals premix and its nutrients includes energy, protein, vitamin B1, B2, B3, Zinc, Folic Acid, vitamin ‘A’ and ‘C’, iron and Calcium while Khichidi ingredients are Rice, Moong Dal, Soya, Turmeric powder, Masala, Salt, edible veg.oil, vitamins and minerals premix with similar nutrients values of Daliya Sweet.

There are around 35,000 beneficiaries from 656 Anganwadi Centre with 1,312 workers and 65 Anganwadi Centre (Mini) with 65 Mini workers in Kangpokpi district. DC Kangpokpi, Somorjit Salam, joint director, ICDS Bantee Konthoujam, deputy director, ICDS Ela Magdalene and DPO ICDS Cell, Kangpokpi, Miranda Zimik also spoke on the occasion.
