Manipur: Heirok locals form human chain for peaceful, fair elections

Locals of Heirok assembly constituency on Wednesday launched a campaign for free and fair elections, forming a human chain and demanding to stop violence and other elements that could disturb the peace.

The movement organised by Sporting Youth Club Heirok Khunou Moirangthem Leikai was launched in connection with the upcoming 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly elections which had been scheduled for early 2022.  

The participants were witnessed holding placards that read, ‘BJP, Congress and NPP are unwelcomed at Heirok assembly constituency if there is going to be violence’, ‘We all want peace’, ‘We will vote in peace’ and ‘Stop election related violence’ among others.

General secretary of Sporting Youth Club Thounaojam Roshan said the movement was organised by the people of Heirok in response to the recent violence and disturbances with a call for ‘an end to election-related violence’ and ‘leaving the populace in peace.’

During the movement, the locals also reminded candidates not to indulge in wayward activities to garner votes and pacify their workers, and also make the elections progressive and peaceful without causing any fear and apprehensions for the public.
