Detained horses not Manipuri ponies: Veterinary experts

Speaking to the Imphal Free Press, Nandakishore said the department was planning to keep the horses at Marjing pony complex but considering its lack of infrastructure they were shifted to Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association, Lamphel.

The nine horses held at Tengnoupal police station were brought to Imphal by veterinary officials and they have been confirmed to be ‘thoroughbred’ horses, not Manipuri ponies after verification.

Director, state veterinary and animal husbandry Ch Nandakishore said the horses are kept separately at Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association, Lamphel. Veterinary experts have verified that the horses are not Manipuri pony breeds. It is learnt that the horses were bought from Pune.

A ‘Thoroughbred’ is a kind of horse breed that are commonly used in horse racing and they are known for their agility, speed and spirit.

Speaking to the Imphal Free Press, Nandakishore said the department was planning to keep the horses at Marjing pony complex but considering its lack of infrastructure they were shifted to Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association, Lamphel and they also needed to be kept separately.  

He said as the horses were brought from outside the state they will be kept quarantined for 5-6 days as per protocol to monitor their health condition with proper care. During verification, it was found that the owner had proper documents, he added. Till the case is settled, the horses will be kept at the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association, Lamphel, said Nandakishore.

He further said the horses will be handed over to the owner after the case is settled.
