India achieves one billion COVID-19 vaccinations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday expressed gratitude scientists, researchers and health workers who have contributed to the achievement.

India on Thursday achieved a historic milestone of ‘one billion’ vaccinations under the nationwide vaccine drive, according to the latest update by the Union Health Ministry.

In a tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the countrymen and expressed gratitude to the country’s scientific community and health professionals for working towards achieving this great feat.

"India scripts history. We are witnessing the triumph of Indian science, enterprise and collective spirit of 130 crore Indians. Congrats India on crossing 100 crore vaccinations. Gratitude to our doctors, nurses and all those who worked to achieve this feat," PM Modi tweeted.

Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus congratulated India on the historic achievement. 

"Congratulations, Prime Minister @narendramodi, the scientists, #healthworkers and people of #India, on your efforts to protect the vulnerable populations from #COVID19 and achieve #VaccinEquity targets," the WHO director-general tweeted in reply to PM Modi's tweet.

PM Modi said in another tweet that October 21, 2021 will forever be remembered in the history books.

Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya also congratulated the country on achieving the landmark vaccinations.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also congratulated the entire nation on the historic achievement.

"Today, India has achieved the target of administering over 100 crore coronavirus vaccines...this record has reacquainted the world with the immense potential of new India," he said in a tweet while congratulating the entire nation on the historic achievement.

"I thank all scientists, researchers and health workers who have contributed in this 'mahayagya' by overcoming many challenges and congratulate Modi ji who is determined for the safety and health of every person," he added.

The country has also conducted 59,57,42,218 total tests for COVID-19 across the country so far. Of the total test conducted in the last 24 hours, 18,454 new positive cases were detected, the ministry said.

The cumulative active caseload stood at 1,78,831 and the active cases account for less than one per cent of the total confirmed cases, currently at 0.52 per cent; lowest since March 2020.

The total COVID-19 confirmed cases reached 3,41,27,450, while the death toll mounted to 4,52,811 with 160 more fatalities.

A total of 17,561 patients reported recovered in the last 24 hours. It has increased the cumulative tally of recovered patients (since the beginning of the pandemic) to 3,34,95,808.

Consequently, India’s recovery rate stood at 98.15 per cent. Recovery Rate is currently at its highest peak since March 2020.

The Weekly Positivity Rate (1.34 per cent) remained less than three per cent for the last 118 days, while the daily positivity rate (1.48 per cent) stood below three per cent for the last 52 days.
