Manipur fishery minister releases over four lakh fingerlings into Loktak Lake

S Rajen said that on the occasion of 32nd Loktak Day celebration, the Department of Fishery, Manipur released 4,10,000 fish fingerlings into the Loktak Lake.

Manipur Fishery and Education Minister S Rajen Singh on Wednesday released more than four lakh fish fingerlings into the Loktak Lake as a part of Loktak Day.

A ministerial team led by S Rajen Singh also reinaugurated Experimental Fish Farm at Sendra.

MLAs L Radhakishore Singh of Oinam Assembly constituency, P Sharatchandra Singh of Moirang Assembly constituency, T Robindro Singh of Thanga Assembly constituency, Commissioner, Fishery M Harekrishna Singh, IAS, Director Fishery, Heisnam Balkrishna Singh and other officials and staffs of fishery department were also present during the occasion.

Speaking to the media, Minister Rajen said that on the occasion of 32nd Loktak Day celebration, the Department of Fishery, Manipur has released 4,10,000 fish fingerlings into the Loktak Lake as a part of the celebration. Out of the 4,10,000 fingerlings, 1,10,000 are contributed from two fish farmers, namely Heisnam Meghachandra Mangangcha from Thanga and Ibosana from Laphupat Tera, he informed.

As a result of mass fish catching through different methods in the Loktak Lake, the number of the aquatic creatures has been decreasing day by day. Majority of the people residing around the lake is also depending on this lake. Fishing is a main occupation of the people on which the people depends for livelihood. That is why the fishery department is releasing fish fingerlings with the objective to multiply varieties of fishes in the lake, he added.

Later, MLA Thanga Assembly consituency Tongbram Robindro Singh along with the members of Loktak Festival Organising Committee, Thanga released more than one lakh fish fingerlings into the Loktak lake at Thanga.
