Legal awareness outreach programmes held across Manipur

The awareness campaign covered Imphal West and Thoubal district, reaching out to more than 70 villages under the two districts.

A legal awareness and outreach programme was conducted by holding a cycle rally led by Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA) member secretary Ojesh Mutum as a part of Pan India Awareness and Outreach Campaign on Saturday.

The campaign was organised under the direction of National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), Manipur State Legal Services Authority in association with the District Legal Services Authority, Thoubal. The awareness drive started at 6 am with a Legal Awareness Programme at Kangla Gate, Imphal West.

The awareness campaign covered Imphal West and Thoubal district, reaching out to more than 70 villages under the two districts. During the special drive, theme songs of NLSA and MASLSA were played and documentaries were shown to the public at various points.  Pamphlets, posters containing information about contact details of Legal Services Institutions and availability of free legal services were distributed to the public.

The cycle rally started from Kangla Gate, Imphal West and the cycling team rode up to Khongjom Gate, Thoubal spreading awareness on the way in various places under Imphal West and Imphal East Districts namely Yaiskul, Singjamei, Canchipur, Liling Bazar and Waithou.

Further, the cycling team was again flagged off at Khongjom by Judge, High Court of Manipur justice Kh Nobin Singh in presence of chairperson, Thoubal DLSA Binny Ngangom; secretary, DLSA Thoubal Km Shanta Athokpam; member secretary, MASLSA Ojesh Mutum; deputy member secretary, MASLSA S Sadananda and cycled through various places under Thoubal district namely Khongjom, Thoubal Bazar, Wangoi and Samurou to spread legal awareness to the public.  

The drive concluded with a tree plantation programme at the premises of Thoubal Court Complex.

It may be mentioned that, the Pan India Awareness cum Outreach Campaign is being held under the direction of NALSA starting from October 2 to November 14 to spread awareness to the people about their rights and entitlements and availability of free legal services from legal services institutions of the state.

Meanwhile, a bike rally on ‘Ride for Equality’ was jointly organised by District Legal Services Authority, Churachandpur Battalion Assam Rifles and Eimi Riders Manipur sponsored by Manipur State Legal Services Authority under the aegis of National Legal Services Authority NALSA.

During the session secretary, DLSA Churachandpur Chief Judicial Magistrate Janggoulen Haokip delivered a welcome speech after which the special invitees commandant, 25 Assam Rifles Churachandpur colonel Vikas Saha SM and N Keertichand Singh given a speech on the importance of Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav. Pamphlets about Section-12 on 5 different tribal languages were handed over to president, Eimi Riders Manipur to be distributed to the villages covered from court complex Churachandpur to Thanlon. 

A total of 31 riders participated in the bike rally today from 9:30 am. It will cover a distance of 150 kms and pass through 30 villages as part of this campaign, wherein the importance of free Legal aid and legal services institutions shall be deliberated.

The District Legal Services Authority, Chandel under the aegis of National Legal Services Authority also organised a one-day Legal Awareness Programme on the topic “Legal Rights of Children” – Especially for Children in Need of Care and Protection (CNCP)  and Children in Conflict with Law (CCL).  The programme was attended by staff of District Childline Services, staff of various Children Homes in  Chandel and Tengnoupal districts, leaders of village authorities, members of  All Tribal Women Organisation and local clubs.
