Shaymkumar defection issue brushed aside

IMPHAL | Mar 20

The issue of Andro MLA, Th Shayamkumar defecting to the BJP has been protested by the Congress today on the floor of the House. Since he was elected on a Congress ticket, it was argued why Shyamkumar should not be disqualified as per the anti-defection law. He had joined the BJP on March 12, a day after the election results were announced.

At the proceeding of the House today, the matter of the ‘floor crossing’was raised by MLA K Meghachandra saying that Shyamkumar should not be sitting in the ruling bench and rather he should be disqualified as per protocol. He should not be given a right to vote in the House, Meghachandra said.

Similarly, MLA of Thangmeiband , Kh Joykisan reiterated that Shyamkumar should be disqualified.

In the regard, CM Biren Singh confirmed that the motion alleged by the Congress legislatures holds no ground. As per the CMs clarification, “ There is a law in front of you, please refer to it,” Biren clarified that what is happening in the House regarding Th Shayamkumar is in complete adherence to legislative norms and the Congress MLAs complaint to the House was understood but was not credible.

What was gathered from the proceedings in the House is that Shyamkumar had legitimate ground in being seated with at the BJP ruling bench and still not under the purview of the anti-defection law. The pro tem Speaker V Hangkhalian unceremoniously brushed aside the motion raised against Shyamkumar from the opposition bench.
