BJP legislators to elect leader today

IMPHAL | Mar 12

After much public speculations and claims from both BJP and the Congress camps, the Bharatiya Janata Party has submitted a list of 31 elected MLAs to the Governor Najma Heptulla this evening at around 8 pm.

General secretary of BJP Ram Madhav said, the legislature party leader would be elected tomorrow and will formally stake claim for forming the government in the state.

The break-up of the 31 legislators are BJP 21, NPF 4, NPP 4, LJP 1 and Trinamool Congress 1.

He said Independent MLA elect Ashab Uddin (Jiribam) will join BJP.

“We have come to a common understanding, NPP, LJP and NPF has agreed to extend their support to the BJP, we have support from some ‘others’ also and it will be shown in front of the House” Madhav told reporters at a press conference at Classic Grande.

He was flanked by Himanta Biswa Sarma, Prahlad Singh Patel, NPP president Conrad Sangma, LJP lone victor Karam Shyam, former DGP and MLA elect Y Joykumar Singh among others.

“We will approach the Governor now to invite the BJP, NPP, LJP group to form the government. NPP and LJP has been partners of BJP for a long time as part of North East Democratic Alliance and you can say that we are birds of the same feather. The mandate is clear for a non-congress government” Madhav said.

Echoing Madhav, NPP President Conrad Sangma said that public has voted for change. “Clearly, Manipur needs to change and we have confidence that under the leadership of PM Modi, there will be change. We are committed to all issues in the state and will work on a common minimum program. We have alliance with the BJP in the centre, and it was natural for us to work with them also.”

Lok Janshakti Party candidate, Karam Shyam said that his party already has an alliance with the BJP and he has been instructed by the party president and union minister Ram Vilas Paswan to join the folds of the BJP.

“We need to finish the Congress regime and that is why we have decided to support BJP, I am the lone MLA and responsible person of the party here. We need to change the political patterns here,” he said.

Ram Madhav said that the Governor has to be satisfied first to invite them to form the Government. “I assure you we have the required support. We cannot bring the 31 MLAs now. But, it will be known within the next 24 hours,” he said.

It may be mentioned that the independent elect Ashab Uddin from Jiribam was not with them while going to the Governor’s residence.

Later, Th Shyamkumar from Andro came to the Governor’s bungalow and said that he wants to leave the Congress to bring change.

“We are confident of forming the next government in Manipur. The NPP has won four seats, LJP has won one seat. Even though we have fought separately we are hopeful that they will join us as they are our partners in the NDA government. We will talk to the TMC and Independent candidates also,” BJP leader and one of the front-runners in the race to ascend to the chief minister’s chair, N Biren, told reporters.
