Sharmila ‘apologises’ to supporters

Irom plans to marry Desmond Coutinho after election

IMPHAL | Feb 16

In an interesting turn of events, human rights activist and PRJA leader Irom Sharmila has today ‘apologised’ to her supporters on behalf of her fiancé Desmond Coutinho.

In a media briefing held at the Uripok Yambem Leikai residence of her staunch supporter Yambem Laba today evening Sharmila apologised for the abusive conduct of her fiancé Desmond Coutinho towards her supporters in the social media.

In a signed statement she said, her fiancé Desmond has been using abusive and unparliamentarily words to describe people who have been supporting her, more recently her new associates of the PRJA party.

She said, the people whose feelings he had hurt include human rights activist Yambem Laba, Babloo Loitongbam, PRJA co-convenor Erendro Laichonbam and James Mayengbam. His tirade also hurt many from the general public and others who are currently looking after her welfare, particularly Sanjoo Thangjam and Tony Khangembam.

As such, she is apologising on behalf of her fiancé Desmond Coutinho and seeking forgiveness from the persons named above and the general people of Manipur.

She however lamented that her well-wisher Tony had sent an e-mail to Desmond, asking him to dissuade Sharmila from electoral politics. She said that it was in poor taste and no one can make her change her mind once committed.

Desmond had slandered supporters of Sharmila on social network platform and there was mudslinging among both sides. The charge of inciting wanton allegations and abusive language was pointed to Desmond by her supporters.

She voiced that Desmond has suffered triple heart attack and that she fears for his life.

“He is nearly 10 years older than me, his health is poor, I wish to marry him once the elections are over,” she said.
